Dr. Mary Ostrye Will Bring 35 Years of Academic Leadership Experience to Improving Student Outcomes

OAKDALE, Minn., July 9, 2015 – Zenith Education Group (Zenith) has appointed Dr. Mary Ostrye as the first provost and chief academic officer of its nonprofit career college system. The hire marks an important step in Zenith’s ongoing efforts to build a new senior leadership team aligned with the organization’s mission to promote the success of its students and graduates. Dr. Ostrye is expected to join Zenith in mid-August.

Dr. Ostrye will bring 35 years of experience in higher education academic leadership. She is currently serving as provost and senior vice president at Ivy Tech Community College, the largest single-accredited statewide community college system — with approximately 200,000 students enrolled at 30 campuses across Indiana — and among the fastest growing community colleges in the nation. In this role, Dr. Ostrye restructured the Ivy Tech math curriculum to better match skills taught with workforce needs, doubled the success of math and writing remediation and created a one-year technical certificate program achieving 70 percent completion rates in the first three years of implementation.

“We are honored to welcome Dr. Mary Ostrye to our organization,” said Dave Hawn, president and CEO of ECMC Group and interim president and CEO of Zenith. “Her accomplishments in aligning program offerings with students’ career goals and employer needs, as well as her commitment to providing academic support for students, make her an ideal fit for our institution. Dr. Ostrye’s deep experience will help Zenith improve student outcomes and provide each student with a clear path to a good job upon graduation.”

“This position offers an incredible opportunity to help re-envision the future of career education at a time when Zenith is still in its early stage,” said Dr. Ostrye. “I look forward to helping the institution build a new model of career college that not only produces top-tier results for students and graduates, but leads the way for other vocational-technical institutions.”

Dr. Ostrye first joined Ivy Tech in 1992 as Dean of Health Sciences at the Evansville campus, where she was responsible for developing the college’s first paramedic science program, as well as successfully leading the program through its first accreditation. During this time, she also served as Manager of Continuing Education. Dr. Ostrye began her education career in 1980 at the West Virginia Institute of Technology as an instructor of dental hygiene.

Zenith, one of the largest nonprofit career college systems in the country, was launched earlier this year when ECMC Group acquired more than 50 Everest and WyoTech career college campuses from the failed Corinthian Colleges chain and transitioned them to nonprofit status. Building a new executive management team is one among a series of ongoing initiatives Zenith has implemented since its creation to meet its promise of putting students first — including key improvements in the areas of program quality, affordability, and accountability and transparency as well as other efforts to strengthen student outcomes. Dr. Ostrye’s appointment follows several other significant hires, including a senior vice president for student success, chief information officer and chief human resources officer. The organization plans to release a report of its progress by September 1.
