Encouraging regular school attendance is one of the most powerful ways an instructor can prepare students for success—both in school and in life.
Brenda Choates, dental assistant instructor at Altierus Career College Atlanta West, does exactly that, and was recently recognized with the Club 100 award.
Club 100 is a student-focused award that all Altierus faculty aim to receive. The goal of the program is for instructors to attain 100 percent retention and 85 percent or higher attendance for the module. Brenda achieved well above the requirements with 100 percent retention and an attendance of 96 percent.
Choates has been teaching in the dental assisting program for nearly six years, but she hasn’t always been an instructor. Prior to joining the Atlanta campus, she worked in a dentist office where she enjoyed seeing patients and advancing her dental skills. However, teaching is where she really found her passion.
“I love being able to see the success of someone else with the help of myself,” Choates said. “I love being a part of the success of others.”
However, Choates has learned that preparing students to be successful doesn’t always mean being their best friend, it means holding them accountable and making sure they follow through with commitments.
Choates added, “I want my students to be held accountable and understand what they do, how they act and what they say matters.” She is preparing them for more than a dental assisting career, she’s preparing them for life, as well.
Choates believes it is important to practice what you preach and leads by example for her students even when times are difficult. Recently, Hurricane Irma tore through Atlanta leaving Choates without power for nearly a week. Along with living without electricity, Choates had a tree fall on her home, holes in her ceiling and leakage in multiple rooms. Through all of this, however, Choates never missed a day of class.
She added, “Being there for my students is so important to me. I am successful as an instructor because I treat my students as if they were my own. I make sure they get everything they need.”
