Altierus Career College Introduces New Surgical Technology Program to Help Close the Skills Gap
Tampa Demand for Skilled Workers in this Field Outpaces National Average*
Tampa, Fla.—May 14, 2018—To address the growing need for skilled labor in healthcare, Altierus Career College has launched a new Surgical Technology Associate Degree program. Local demand for surgical technologists is expected to grow more than 8 percent over the next few years in Tampa, outpacing the national average.*
"The Surgical Technology program is our latest educational offering in the healthcare field, which continues to grow and expand in the Tampa market," said Michael Schwam, campus director of Altierus Career College-Tampa. "By increasing the number of well-trained, prepared Surgical Technologists in the workforce, we’re helping to ensure our community is able to serve the needs of its residents now and into the future."
Students enrolling in the program will receive hands-on instruction in the school’s new surgical technology lab. This simulated operating room features anatomically correct mannequins with functioning organs, as well as the same equipment present in a traditional operating room like an anesthesia machine and standard surgical instrumentation.
Students also will receive a portion of their training at an area hospital or surgery center, such as Tampa General Hospital.
"Tampa General Hospital strongly values our partnerships with many of our local colleges and universities," said Rico Ruiz, director of Organizational Development at Tampa General Hospital. "As a teaching facility and clinical site, we trust our college/university partners to introduce us to students who are fully engaged and excited about the many opportunities that exist in the field of healthcare."
The new program includes certification testing and is designed to be completed in 24 months.
"We are committed to serving the greater Tampa area by providing a sophisticated learning environment while also graduating well-trained healthcare professionals to bridge the skills gap," Schwam said. "We offer a low instructor-to-student ratio as well as state–of-the-art tools to ensure our students have the training they need to successfully enter this burgeoning field."
In addition to diploma and degree programs, Altierus supports students with professional skills development, resume development, job interview practice, externships, and job placement assistance. Recognizing that student success relies on a balance between the demands of daily life and their education, Altierus provides ride-share programs, library computers, tutors, and other resources to help support students in their school experience.
